What Difference Does Texture Make?

Texture glove working with grease

You know how your tyre tread prevents you from spinning out on wet and slippery roads? Well, texture is your gloves tread for working with oily, greasy, or slippery items.

And just like tyre tread, different types of texture are best for specific applications.

Let’s discuss the advantages of the three main glove textures – smooth, textured, and raised texture.

Smooth Gloves

Pretty straightforward, smooth gloves are smooth, they have no texture. They prioritise touch sensitivity over grip strength and can be more cost-effective since they skip the added texturing process.

Some smooth gloves have texture on the fingers for enhanced grip on precision tasks, this is commonly labelled ‘finger textured grip’.

Textured Gloves

Textured gloves mimic your hand’s natural grip with a little upgrade. Fully textured gloves have micro bumps from the fingers to the palm to enhance grip in wet, dry, and slippery environments. You can’t go wrong with the slightly rougher surface of fully textured gloves.

Raised Texture Gloves

There are a few versions of raised textured gloves, but the most common is raised diamond texture (RDT). RDT acts the most like deep tyre tread by channelling liquid into the grooves to provide you with a strong grip in wet, oily, and slippery environments.

Fish scale is another popular version of raised texture. Different types of raised textured gloves do similar jobs of strengthening your hold and preventing items from dropping or slipping when working in slippery conditions.
